My dear elder cousin Mei Lan,
A few days ago, I visited you and then we went out painting from nature.
While I was painting, I quietly looked at you painting at times.
You're a good painter.
I just don't compare.
I had learnt some painting techniques that day and I should thank you for your impressive hospitality.
Later on the same day, I saw some brick stoves under the beans canopy outside your house.
Are they for barbecue?
A few days later I'll go to Castle Peak Bay with my classmates.
We want to have a barbecue for lunch but don't have experience of cooking outdoors.
Could you tell me how to do it?
Wish you all the best!
Your younger cousin Cing Yi

The astronaut got out of the spaceship.
He was floating around in outer space which was full of stars.
What a marvellous feat!
Looking at the earth, it was tens of millions of kilometers away.
The dots were mountains; the lines were rivers.
Looking this part and looking that part, every part of the Earth was beautiful!

The majestic City Hall was erected on Edinburgh Place at the seashore of Central, Hong Kong.
We crossed the sea from Kowloon by Star Ferry.
After going ashore, we walked dozens of steps and entered a side entrance.
The view was very different from the outside.
There was a modern style garden.
A few short trees waving in the wind looked like greeting us.
Flower beds lay here and there.
The bright reds and vivid greens of the plants matched the mottled tiles of the path.
A stone bridge was built over a pond.
The structure was graceful.
The City Hall Low Block was in the east.
In the Low Block, there were exhibition rooms, lecture rooms, music halls and theatres.
Every day had new shows.
There were luxurious restaurants and coffee shops too.
The High Block was in the west.
It was grand, beautiful and stately.
There were lecture rooms, art galleries, exhibition rooms and a library inside.
The Library had a very good collection of books for the public's access.
After our visit, we went out of the back door.
Going through a tunnel, we saw an exquisite garden.
There was a fountain bright with many colours.
This beautiful place was called Statue Square.

Today is Lichun, i.e. the beginning of spring according to the traditional Chinese calender.
My father said: 'We Chinese have a common talk that eggs can stand on its end on the day of Lichun. Let's take a try.'
He gave me and my elder sister an egg separately.
We placed the eggs on the tabletop which was not so smooth.
We tried to make it stand carefully.
But every time we let go our hold, they fell over.
My sister was more careful and patient.
She tried again and again.
Finally, her egg stood actually.
She was glad.
She said to father: 'The common talk is true!'
Father smiled and said: 'Not only on Lichun, eggs can stand all the time, but no one try to do it patiently on other days. I told you the common talk, so that you would have had confidence in doing it. You did it patiently, so you succeeded.'
I asked Father: 'Why can the egg stand on its end?'
Father said: 'Let me put it this way. The shell of an egg usually has many small bumps and dimples. It can be made to touch a flat surface on three points at the same time. If the three contact points lies below the egg's center of mass, the egg will still stand after you let go your hold. But it is not easy to make it stand. You should be careful and patient. Some think that eggs won't stand in any case. It is unreasonable. If you're unreasonable, you won't find the truth. Some think that eggs can stand only on Lichun. It is superstitious. It goes against science.'

Surfing is an exciting and strenuous sport.
There are more people surfing in Hong Kong in recent years.
My elder cousin Ping is a good surfer.
Last weekend, his wife Mandy invited me to watch him surfing.
The sun shone bright on the billowing boundless sea.
I sat on a flat and smooth rock with Mandy on the waterfront.
We looked attentively at Ping's every single move while he was surfing.
Though I never thought of learning surfing, I wanted to take a good look at it.
Ping's surfboard was made of fiberglass and foamed plastic.
At the rear part of the board, there was a fin like the one on a shark's back.
At first, Ping waited with the narrow surfboard motionless.
When there were waves, he surfed on the board at the speed of about 20 miles per hour.
The waves billowed wildly on the blue sea.
They looked like steep slopes.
Ping moved faster at that time.
Surfing up and down, he went through the arch of a large wave.
Waves in front fell down, then waves in back rose up.
The surfboard splashed its way.
With a high speed, Ping showed good judgement in riding the waves smooth and steady.
The waves were beautiful, majestic, brisk and dangerous.
It looked like that they're luring or challenging the surfers.
The rushing, dashing, rolling and surging of the waves are the melody and rhythm of nature.
The scene was so grand and spectacular that nothing else could even be compared to it.
When Ping was back on the shore, he looked vigorous and bore the smile of a conqueror.

Today our school held an autumn tour.
The destination was Nam Wai in Sai Kung.
At 8 o'clock in the morning, we set off from school by bus.
Going along the winding Clear Water Bay Road, we arrived after 9 o'clock.
There was a thick forest.
Outside the forest, it was an autumn scene.
Far on the sea, there were many small islands scattered like chesspieces.
It was beautiful.
We placed our belongings and went to do what we liked respectively.
Some played badminton; some kicked shuttlecock; some had a barbecue; some collected shells on the beach; some played party games with teachers.
Happy times fly like a rocket.
The sun was setting and we had to leave with our teacher.

Uncle Zoeng was very old, but he was strong.
He lived in the new suburb.
Everybody there knew him.
Everyday he woke up early in the morning and strolled in the neighbourhood.
He liked exercise.
In the evening, children living in the suburb played on the lawn.
When they saw uncle Zoeng, they would ask him to tell stories.

On a dusty road, my uncle was driving to Lau Fau San at high speed in a car of light apricot colour.
There were old-fashioned tea booths and garden-like restaurant in Lau Fau San.
Many visitors went there to eat oysters in the holiday.
Lau Fau San was the only place farming oysters in Hong Kong.
When we were in a restaurant, a waiter served us a pot of famous tea and asked what we would like to have.
While we were drinking tea, my uncle said: 'Oysters are tasty. Its flesh is soft and smooth. Long time ago, the literary giant Su Dong Po was degraded to be an official of Hainan Island. In an oyster feast his friend held, Su said: "Oysters in this place are delicious. Don't let the officials of imperial court know that. I don't want to share with them."'
Hearing my uncle talking cheerfully, the owner of the restaurant came to greet us and asked me: 'Boy, do you know how we get the oysters?'
Then a man with bushy eyebrows and a high forehead appeared at a slow pace.
'I bred the oysters you're eating,' the man put in. 'You won't believe that I breed oysters with stone, will you?'
It was very curious.
'Breed with stone?' my uncle said. 'I would like to know more about that.'
'I'm not telling lies,' the man said with a loud voice. 'We mix oyster shells, stones and cement to make something like tiles. While the tide is in, we throw them to the shallow marine water. While the tide is out, we'll put them in order. The smell of oyster shells attract young oysters. They'll come and attach to the stuff. Finally they'll be glued to it by a sticky liquid for the rest of their life. It's a long time for the little oyster growing into the size favourable for eating - about 3 years and 4 months.'
After his speech, we nodded.

A boy rode on a bamboo hobbyhorse.
He ran around at speed.
'Why are you riding the horse?' his elder sister asked.
'I want to be a general,' the boy replied.
'Where are you going to?' his younger sister asked.
'Enter the city gate,' the boy replied.

Yesterday morning we went to the airport to bid farewell to my elder brother.
He was going to study abroad.
In the departure lounge, mother held his hand and said, 'It's the first time you go abroad. You should be careful and take good care of yourself.'
'I hope you'll graduate and return soon.' my elder sister said.
'I'll miss you,' I said.
After the aeroplane took off, we stayed for a while and then went home.

A cicada was singing out continuously.
A mantis heard the voice.
He wanted to catch the cicada.
'The cicada is so small,'the mantis thought. 'It'll be easy to catch him. I'll have a great lunch.'
While the mantis was hunting the cicada, he didn't know that there was a siskin behind him.
The siskin caught the mantis with ease.

It was a shocking day and it was the day a new island was born.
On November 14, 1963, to the south of Iceland, a fishing vessel was working at dawn.
Suddenly the captain, the chief officer and the sailors felt the vessel shaking, just like spinning in a whirlpool.
At the same time, there was a smell of gunpowder.
Then there came a loud noise like thunder from the sky, and billows dashed high on the sea.
Recovering from astonishment, they looked forward.
A volcano could be seen smoking in the distance.
The smoke looked like a big black pillar over 2000 meters in height.
Fiery lava spurted from the volcano.
Some even flew across a long distance of 1500 meters and fell into the sea.
This heart-shaking natural phenomena looked like the sky was burning and the mountains were shaking with thunder.
Although being so far away, people in the capital of Iceland could feel the astonishment.
Scientists, ambulance corps and security forces of Iceland - they all hurried to the sea to get closer to the incident.
At that time, the volcano was still very angry and red in the face.
It opened its big mouth and jetted out horrible flames.
Hot liquid rocks in the flames flew far to the sea.
They fought against the billows fiercely.
The next morning, the rock won the fight finally.
It stood steadily in the sea and stuck out of the water surface.
On the fourth day, the rock sticking out had become 700 meters long and 80 meters high.
It hadn't been completely solid yet.
It seemed that it couldn't withstand the billows.
Five months later, the volcanic eruption was approaching to the end.
The rock still stood erectly over the sea.
The scientists declared that a new island was born.
They named it 塞爾澤.
Five years later, White crucifers grew from the cracks of the cliffs and animals moved about at the beach.
There had been new lives on this new island.

A blind person and a lame person lived together.
One night, a neighboring house was aflame suddenly.
The fire became fiercer and fiercer.
It became closer and closer to the house they lived.
It was very dangerous.
They were in a state of confusion.
They didn't know how to escape.
Since the blind couldn't see and the lame couldn't walk, it was difficult for them to escape from the fire.
As the saying goes, good ideas come at times of crisis.
The blind carried the lame on the back at once and asked the lame to guide him.
Relying on their cooperation, they had escaped from the fire at last.

Living in the modern society, we need to face many problems.
We should trust each other and cooperate.
If you want to win other people's trust and cooperation, you should be truthful.
If we tell lies or our conduct disagrees with our words, we're untruthful.
Plastering over shortcomings, pleasing others, cheating people — these are the reasons why we lie.
When people know that you're a liar, they won't believe you anymore.
If you want to be a truthful man, you should talk and act honestly.

Today I woke up early in the morning.
Seeing the twilight outside the window, I got up at once and went cleaning up.
The sun rises earlier in summer morning.
Although it was just after 5 o'clock, the day was dawning.
Standing alone on the balcony, I looked up at the sky.
The moon had already disappeared.
There were only a few remaining stars and they faded away before long.
The night was over.
A light red colour emerged in the east.
The sun was rising gradually.
The sunlight was bright and brilliant.
It dyed the clouds red, purple, orange...
It was beautiful.
Beads of dew still clung to the pot plants beside the railings a short while ago, but now they had vanished all together.
They must had been evaporated by the sun.
I could hear birds' melodious tweeting from afar.
People woke up to greet this new day.

They're poisons.
Don't eat them.

Fire can burn down the house, so don't play with fire.

On the day of my cousin's wedding, my mother and I went to offer our congratulations.
We wished the couple much happiness together.
There were many people at the wedding feast.
There were many children too.
We greeted one another, we talked and we laughed.

Ming was the driver of our school bus.
He was a strong man in his thirties.
Every day I went and left school by the school bus he drove.
He had an excellent working attitude.
He would stop the bus properly before letting us get on or get off.
He always said: 'Every day I drive children to school or back home. I help them arrive on time. I love my job.'

Little Raindrop was falling.
"Where are my brothers?"
Little Raindrop and his brothers were separated.
"Where am I?"
He opened his eyes and had a look.
Oh, Little Raindrop had fallen on an umbrella.
"It's beautiful!"
Little Raindrop stood up and wanted to take a good look at the umbrella.
"Ouch!"
Accidentally, Little Raindrop slipped off the umbrella.
Little Raindrop fell to the gutter.
The gutter was dirty and stinking.
Litter Raindrop became grimy.
......
Suddenly, the river was in a turnmoil.
Little Raindrop was caught with tadpoles in a bottle.
"Ma, I've caught many tadpoles!" a boy shouted happily.
"Ouch!"
The boy tumbled over and the bottle was dropped.
Little Raindrop and the tedpoles returned to the river.
They swam forward on and on.
Finally, Little Raindrop went to the sea.
He found that it was an interesting place there.
Fishes were swimming here and there.
Seashells looked like beautiful dresses.
Little Raindrop swam to the surface of the sea.
"Little Raindrop, come back home," Uncle Sun called him.
"No, I don't want to go home."
Little Raindrop still wanted to go around.

Little monkey, come here.
Let mama give you a hug.

There is a commemoration today.
Everyone has arrived on time.
No one is late.

In the garden, there is an artificial hill, a fishpond, plants and a lawn.
The scene is fantastic.

Pastries are made from rice flour.
Biscuits are made from wheat flour.
Pastries and biscuits are both delicious.

My father invited a visitor to stay for dinner.
He asked the visitor to take a seat.
I served the dishes and then had dinner with them.

Have some fresh fruits everyday.
It's good for your health.
Don't eat rotten fruits.

You should eat green vegetables and soybean curd frequently.

When the guest came, I greeted him.
When the guest left, I showed him to the door.

That was a new year.
We wore new clothes.
When we met for the first time of that year, we said, 'Happy new year!'

Good-bye, teacher.
We're leaving for holidays.

On the sea, a boat was sailing in the distance.

Hiding in its mother's pouch, the little kangaroo doesn't fear wind or rain.

Treat your teachers with respect and love your classmates.

It's cool to sit in the shade of a giant tree.

I saw the sun in that morning.

It's my mother's birthday.
We sing and dance.

Making soup with green vegetables and soybean curd.

It's a durian.
Isn't it fragrant?
It's regarded by many people as the king of fruits.

The little monkey was so funny.
It wore a suit of bright-coloured clothes and attempted to act like a man.

It was a sunny day.
We played outdoors.
We swam and basked in the sun.

There're shrimps in the river.

I lost my way, so I asked a policeman for direction.

Cock, hen, chicks! Come eat rice! Come eat worms!

Lambs are bleating.
They don't eat grass.

There're some sentences below I translated from some old Chinese textbooks for primary school pupils.

"What is the origin of the uncooked rice?"

Since then he didn't like fighting anymore.

There are a few acres of mulberry field.

Last Sunday, my schoolmates gave a variety show in school.
There were singing and dancing shows.
We also gave a stage play.
The title of the play was "Brothers".
It was about the love between brothers.
I acted the elder brother in the play.
It was the first time I were on the stage, so I were nervous.
After the show, the audience said that they enjoyed it.
I were so happy with the result.

On the small bamboo table, there were needles, threads, a ruler and a pair of scissors.
Sitting beside the table, my mother threaded a needle, then sewed clothes for me.

C dug some potatoes and brought them home.
He chose a small potato and made it a toy pig.
The pigtail was a short root.
For the legs, he peeled four bamboo slips and stuck them on the potato.
Then the toy pig was complete, he named it Pigtato.
He played it with his brothers and sisters.

We should always clean up our room and keep the dirt away.
Keep the windows open for fresh air and sunlight.

You buy cloth.
I buy cloth.
We don't buy foreign cloth.
We buy local cloth.

「Cable News Network,
